There is a common assumption that we know ourselves better than anyone else. We live with ourselves every day, experience our emotions, and make our own decisions. But this isn’t always true.
There are times when we feel unfamiliar with ourselves. We don’t fully understand how we feel, why something feels heavy, or why the decisions we make seem to go against what we once wanted.
Looking Outward More Than Inward
This often happens because we are more used to understanding what’s outside of us than what’s inside. We learn to read situations, understand other people, and adapt to our surroundings.
At the same time, we rarely pause to truly understand ourselves in an honest way. As a result, many things within us go unnoticed without us fully realizing it
The Parts of Ourselves We Avoid
There are also parts of ourselves we tend to avoid. These are the parts that feel uncomfortable to acknowledge.
Often, these include feelings of being tired, confused, or unsure about the direction of our lives. Admitting these feelings is part of being human. Still, at times we act as though everything is fine.
In moments like these, some parts of ourselves become harder to acknowledge.
Making Space to Understand Ourselves
At the same time, we are always changing. What we feel and think can shift over time. Things that once felt important can lose their meaning, while things we never paid attention to can begin to matter.
Because of this, understanding ourselves is not something that is ever fully completed.
It is not only about finding answers, but about allowing space to see ourselves more honestly. This isn’t always a quick or easy process. Some parts take time to understand, while others only become clear after we truly go through them.
In this process, not everything about ourselves can be understood right away. Sometimes the first step is simply acknowledging that we are not okay, that the direction ahead still feels unclear, or that there are parts of ourselves we are still trying to understand. That awareness itself can become the beginning of seeing ourselves more clearly.

Being Gentle with Ourselves
Struggling to understand ourselves doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It’s completely natural.
We are not always in a state of clarity or certainty. There are times when everything feels unclear, and that does not always need to be resolved immediately.
What is overlooked is how we treat ourselves during this process. Being too harsh on ourselves can push us further away from understanding what we feel.
Understanding Ourselves in Small Moments
Over time, self-understanding does not always come in the form of big answers. It often appears in small moments. In the way we begin to notice what makes us feel tired, what we truly need, or what we no longer want to force.
We may never fully know ourselves. There will always be parts that change, grow, or remain unclear. But that does not make the process meaningless.
Understanding ourselves is not about becoming someone who has all the answers. It’s about being willing to keep observing, accepting, and moving forward, even when we don’t fully understand who we are yet.
Not always knowing ourselves is not a flaw. It is where the space for growth remains open.
