Why Do I Struggle to Understand Myself Sometimes?

The Assumption That We Truly Know Ourselves

There is a common assumption that we know ourselves better than anyone else. We live with ourselves every day, experience our emotions, and make our own decisions. But this isn’t always true.

There are times when we feel unfamiliar with ourselves. We don’t fully understand how we feel, why something feels heavy, or why the decisions we make seem to go against what we once wanted.

Looking Outward More Than Inward

This often happens because we are more used to understanding what’s outside of us than what’s inside. We learn to read situations, understand other people, and adapt to our surroundings. At the same time, we rarely pause to truly understand ourselves in an honest way.

Feelings do not always come in clear forms. Sometimes they appear as tiredness, confusion, or even silence that’s difficult to explain. Without realizing it, we often move past these moments without really trying to understand them.

The Parts of Ourselves We Avoid

There are also parts of ourselves we tend to avoid. These are the parts that feel uncomfortable to acknowledge. Admitting that we feel tired, confused, or uncertain about our direction is not always easy. As a result, there can be a tendency to appear as though everything is fine, even to ourselves.

We Are Always Changing

At the same time, we are always changing. What we feel and think can shift over time. Things that once felt important can lose their meaning, while things we never paid attention to can begin to matter. Because of this, understanding ourselves is not something that is ever fully completed.

Making Space to Understand Ourselves

It is not only about finding answers, but about allowing space to see ourselves more honestly. This isn’t always a quick or easy process. Some parts take time to understand, while others only become clear after we truly go through them.

In this process, not everything needs to be explained right away. Some things simply need to be acknowledged first. That we’re not okay, that we don’t fully understand where we’re going, or that we’re still searching. That awareness itself can be an important starting point.

Being Gentle with Ourselves

Struggling to understand ourselves doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It is simply part of being human. We are not always in a state of clarity or certainty. There are times when everything feels unclear, and that does not always need to be resolved immediately.

What is often overlooked is how we treat ourselves during this process. Being too harsh on ourselves only pushes us further away. On the other hand, allowing ourselves not to have all the answers can help us see things more clearly.

Understanding Ourselves in Small Moments

Over time, self-understanding does not always come in the form of big answers. It often appears in small moments. In the way we begin to notice what makes us feel tired, what we truly need, or what we no longer want to force.

Living Without Full Clarity

We may never fully know ourselves. There will always be parts that change, grow, or remain unclear. But that does not make the process meaningless.

Understanding ourselves is not about becoming someone who has all the answers. It’s about being willing to keep observing, accepting, and moving forward, even when we don’t fully understand who we are yet.

Not always knowing ourselves is not a flaw. It is where the space for growth remains open.
